Six Microphones is a site-determined composition of audio feedback which explores the mutually constitutive relationships among sound, space, and audience. This recording is excerpted from a 2013 installation of the piece at Storefront for Art and Architecture in New York City.
0001 score
0002 speakers
0006 microphones
0012 linear controllers
5376 set points
Each of the six microphones complete an independent feedback loop with two speakers using twelve (6x2) PID controllers. Over the duration of the piece, each controller forces its microphone-speaker-feedback-loop to converge on amplitude set points encoded in a score file. While achieving these amplitudes— and interacting with each other in unanticipated ways— the control systems discover resonant frequencies and modulations determined by the geometry of the listening space, its materiality, and the location of any inhabitants.
The score is comprised of six parts and an overture. Within each, the microphones enumerate 64 (2^6) combinations of ON and OFF. The six parts differ in the relative amplitudes of ON microphones, the duration of their onset, and the speaker to which each ON microphone is assigned. All tones, timbres, and modulations emerge from the indifferent interaction among these parameters and the environment during a performance; they cannot be anticipated beforehand.
